Well something along those lines anyway.
A couple of Sundays ago our resident Irishman, Marty “born to run” Kane, our Kiwi ambassador, Gen “Fitness Freak” Hole and myself (the lone Aussie) completed the gruelling 14.38km Run for the Kids.
A lot of nervous energy was lost before the start of the race, mainly from the Irishman who wasn’t sure exactly how long 14.38km was. “How many miles does that translate to?” he asked just seconds before the race was due to start. Needless to say his non-fussed attitude was backed up by some pretty serious running ability as he took off like a bull out of the gate as soon as the race started.
The “Fitness Freak” took off along side him matching him for early speed whilst I decided to let my feet do the talking later on and give the early pace setters a little headway to start with.
So we travelled over and through some of Melbourne’s best known landmarks – the Domain Tunnel, Westgate Freeway, Bolte Bridge, Docklands and Southbank promenade dripping sweat and giving our all in the name of charity.
For those of you who don’t know the Run for the Kids is a charity running race where a large portion of each entry fee is donated to the Royal Childrens Hospital. This years race raised $1.4 million for the Good Friday Appeal. And with 33,000 runners on board, this years run was the biggest in the event’s history.
Whilst none of us set any records we were all able to complete the course in “fairly reasonable” times and by the way my early poise did pay off in the long run with the Aussie getting the chocolates over his OS team mates in the finish. This may have been due to the Irishman trying his luck with a fellow female entrant whilst jogging over the Bolte Bridge (where else?) which may have effected his time slightly. He tells me it was “worth a try”.
A celebratory Gatorade followed by a few beers were the order of the day afterwards. A good time had by all “doing it for the kids”.

This Sunday will see the ‘Run For The Kids’ take over the streets of Melbourne (much like the weather did last weekend).
The race, conducted annually to raise money for our Royal Children’s Hospital, takes competitors on a rather scenic 14.6 kilometre (that’s right folks – 14.6 kilometre) course starting at Kings Domain, through the Domain Tunnel over the Bolte Bridge back into the city via the Docklands, past the Arts Centre and finishing up where they started.
This year’s run sees National Pharmacies step up as a major sponsor and anyone that knows CUBED knows we’re always up for supporting a client – particularly when it’s for a good cause. In fact it’s the sixth children’s charity we’ve helped out in the last 12 months.
So joining 29,996 other runners will be The CUBED team, consisting of Production Manager Brendan “Lone Wolf” Hanrahan, Art Director Daniel “The Kid” Gretch, Account Manager Laura “Bunny” Campbell and Creative Director Dave “Old Man” Scott.
Though Laura is unwilling to state publicly what time we should expect from her, Dan and Brendan are a safe bet for no more than an hour 15, whereas Dave is already making excuses in case he’s still not finished until next Tuesday.
If you’re in the area, pop on down and give them a cheer, or if you’d like to donate a couple of dollars to the Royal Children’s Hospital yourself and support a great cause without having to get blisters just click here.
